Massage brings great relief to your client, helping with muscle tension and strain, but what does it do for you? Whether you carry out out the occasional massage treatments or regular massage treatments you are putting strain on your own body, especially your hands and wrists. Do you ache; have pain or the onset or RSI?
What is RSI?
Repetitive strain injury or RSI as it is often referred as is used to describe aches and pain in any part of the upper body caused by overuse or poor working posture. It is an umbrella term and is also known as Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD).
There are two types of RSI:-
- Specific Named Conditions – these include tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tennis elbow.
- Diffuse RSI – this is where there is no clear-cut diagnosis but a range of symptoms exist. Sometimes it is known as non-specific pain syndrome
As we know carrying out a full body massage involves repetitive use of your thumbs, hands & wrists in order to create the techniques used along with standing in often uncomfortable position due to bad posture.
With massage many of the techniques create a repetitive strain on the small muscles of the lower arm and within the hand, especially the thumbs. This strain also causes movement of the nerves/muscles in the arms and shoulders, and this to over time lead to problems.
So where do you normally feel the pain?
Pain in the hands – Forearms – Wrists – Fingers – Palm of the hand – Elbows – Shoulders
Do you as a therapist experience any of the following before, during or after carrying out a treatment?
- Weakness in the hands or forearms?
- Tingling, numbness, or loss of sensation?
- Lack of strength in your hands? Is it harder to open products?
- Lack of control or coordination?
- Fatigue or lack of endurance?
- Sympathy pains? Do your hands hurt when someone else talks about their hand pain?
During your training, in addition to learning specific hands free massage techniques, you’ll be shown how to stretch/warm up before you carry out a treatment, after all we always warm up the client’s muscles before a deeper massage treatment.
All the techniques you will be learn can be used as additional ‘tools’ when carrying out a massage, they can be used as a skilful responsive way benefiting both yourself and your client. Blending hands free massage techniques works smoothly with all massage treatments.
