This qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within industry wishing to become a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982. 

The ProTrainings First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) qualification (FAW) is ideal for most businesses whose risk assessment has identified that they require a fully trained first aider for their workplace. All courses are delivered, evaluated and quality assured to meet the new guidelines and meet the requirements of the First Aid at Work (First Aid) regulations and subsequent including the 1st October 2017 changes. All our first aid courses fully meet the UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2015 as per the HSE requirements (2015 are the latest guidelines). ProTrainings Vocational Training Qualifications (VTQ) are fully recognised by the HSE as Trade Body Qualifications.

This course must be at least 18 contact hours and run over a minimum of 3 day and the certificate is valid for 3 years. To renew you need to attend a 12 contact hour 2 day FAW requalification course.

In May 2016 the HSE and Awarding Organisations announced that computer based blended training is now allowed for all workplace first aid courses. You can now become a fully qualified First Aider in the workplace, with 2 days of classroom training after completing this online course. First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) – FAW Curriculum Includes:

Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider – Be able to assess an incident  – Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty

Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)  – Demonstrate CPR using a manikin

Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position – Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position

Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking  – Identify when choking is: – mild – severe – Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding  – Identify the severity of external bleeding  – Demonstrate control of external bleeding

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock  – Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries  – Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with: – small cuts – grazes – bruises – small splinters  – Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds

Be able to conduct a secondary survey – Identify the information to be collected when gathering a casualty history – Demonstrate how to conduct a head to toe survey

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints – Recognise suspected fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains – Identify how to administer first aid for fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains – Demonstrate how to apply a support sling and an elevated sling

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries – Recognise a suspected head injury and spinal injury – Identify how to administer first aid for a suspected head injury – Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a suspected spinal injury

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injury – Recognise a suspected: Flail chest / penetrating chest injury – Identify how to administer first aid for a Flail chest / penetrating chest injury

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scolds – Identify the factors that affect the severity of burns and scalds – Identify how to administer first aid for burns involving: dry heat/wet heat/electricity/chemicals

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury – Identify how to administer first aid for eye injuries involving: Dust/chemicals/embedded objects

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning – Identify the routes that poisons can take to enter the body – Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty affected by sudden poisoning – Identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning

Please note upon expiry of your first aid certificate if you continue to be your companies trained first aider a re-qualification course becomes necessary.
